The Science and Engineering of Launching Startups

Join us for an interactive 3-day bootcamp to practice developing an entrepreneurial mindset and learn how to apply that to your research approach moving forward.

Truly breakthrough innovations often come from development of basic science and engineering; however, realizing the impact of that science requires developing a pathway to commercialization. Success comes from blending a technology-push and market-pull based approach to entrepreneurship, where the technology entrepreneur identifies a clear pain point that the technology addresses for a sizable customer segment and works to demonstrate that the technology can in fact create the required value to drive adoption. Fighting through the uncertainty to identify and eventually validate the market opportunity for a new technology requires the tech-push entrepreneur has a strong entrepreneurial mindset—they must be highly adaptable and realize that their first assumptions about the market for their technology may be wrong and be willing to adapt accordingly.

This 3-day session will teach research scientists and engineers how to apply an entrepreneurial mindset to translate science and engineering technologies into products and services that positively impact our world. The sequence focuses on linking laboratory science to the market.

The course will provide the attendees with:

  • a high-level understanding of the entrepreneurship process for innovation-driven ventures,
  • an understanding of the first steps they should take if they are interested in commercialization of their research,
  • an overview of what resources are available to support them, both inside and outside of Rice, and
  • alternative pathways beyond startups to see their research realize its full potential for societal impact.

The content is delivered in a three-day-long sequence by experts at and beyond Rice. Sessions combine lectures, case studies, examples, and in-class exercises to bring the concepts to life. Participants will have the opportunity to engage with members of industry R&D, entrepreneurs, and scientists who have successfully commercialized university technology.
