MGMT 621/927 The New Enterprise (3)
The New Enterprise is an experiential entrepreneurship course, where you form teams and work towards starting a venture. You'll accomplish this by identifying and testing assumptions about what the problem you're trying to solve is, who your customer is, what you can do for them that is different from existing alternatives, how you'll reach them, and how you'll make money. Note: First Years, MGMT 621 The New Enterprise is an option for your Custom Core. This class is required for the Entrepreneurship concentration, so we strongly recommend that you take it in the Spring of your first year.
MGMP 626 Financing the Startup Venture (1.5)
Interested in financing options for startups? You’ll explore crowdfunding, angel investors, accelerators, and the venture capital industry, as well as the operation, methodology and liquidation of venture capital funds. Note: This course is a co-requisite for MGMT 740 Student Venture Fund: Evaluating Startup Investment Opportunities. If you are planning to take MGMT 740, then you must also register for MGMP 626 if you have not already completed the course, or complete MGMT 626. In 2019-2020, this course will be offered Fall semester.

Students will identify, screen, and evaluate startups for investment by the Rice venture capital fund. Through this highly experiential course, students will learn tools for rigorously evaluating startup ventures for investment, valuing early stage companies, and structuring investments. **NEW** MGMT 766 Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab (1.5)
This lab is designed for healthcare entrepreneurs who want to build innovative medical technologies. Students will work with nascent medical device startups from the MGMT 799 Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fall course. MGMT 799 Healthcare Innovation and Entrepreneurship (1.5-3.0)
This course is designed for healthcare entrepreneurs who want to build innovative medical technologies. Students work in interdisciplinary teams comprised of engineering, business, and medical students. MGMT 613 Systems Thinking in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (1.5)
This course explores the human and social dynamics critical to the evolving world of technology innovation and entrepreneurship. Topics include: social systems; entrepreneurial mindset; the future of work and organizations; understanding new fields and data; the changing relationship between humans and technology; and questions in privacy, security, and regulation. Note: This class is ideal for those interested in entrepreneurship and innovation in diverse settings.
MGMT 623 Commercialization in Pharma/Biotech (1.5)
Provides an insider’s perspective on workings and challenges of an early to mid-stage pharmaceutical company. Current company issues and case studies are discussed. Intended for those considering a career in a biotech startup company.
**NEW** MGMT 625 Design Thinking (1.5)
Design thinking is a problem-solving process that can be used to reduce risk when launching a new idea and increase your chances of developing an innovative solution that people want. In this project-based course, we will gain new insights into high-potential problem spaces and use an iterative experimentation process to ensure efficient resource utilization. Note: This class is ideal for those interested in entrepreneurship, innovation, and creative thinking.
MGMT 626 Venture Capital (1.5)
The goal of this course is to provide students with an overview of financing options for startups. The course covers crowdfunding, angel investors, accelerators, and the venture capital industry; the organization and operation of venture capital funds; investment methodology; monitoring and portfolio liquidation. Note: This is a pre-requisite for MGMT 740.

Explore the needs approach to buying and selling businesses; enterprise valuation; deal and contract structuring; mergers and acquisitions; leveraged buyouts; consolidating fragmented industries.
MGMT 633 Roles of Physicians, Scientists, Engineers and MBAs in High-tech Startups (1.5)
Discuss the major trends and innovations driving the creation of products in established companies and VC-backed startup companies. Live, ongoing case studies are presented by guest entrepreneurs of biotech, medical device, and healthcare informatics companies. Note: This class is ideal for those interested in entrepreneurship and healthcare innovation.
MGMT 637 Dilemmas in Founding New Ventures (1.5)
Frameworks for making informed decisions about human capital when founding a new venture, including co-founders, early hires, advisors, board members, and investors.
MGMT 641 Entrepreneurial Strategy (1.5)
This course provides a deep understanding of the core strategic challenges facing startup innovators, and a framework implementing entrepreneurial strategy in dynamic environments. Learn how to balance experimentation and learning with the selection and implementation of a strategy in order to establish competitive advantage. Note: This class is ideal for those interested in entrepreneurship or financing startup ventures.
MGMT 676 Social Enterprise (1.5)
What might constitute social responsibility in a market setting? If social responsibility connotes a connection between a person and a social problem, how might it be exercised in a market transaction of buying or selling? Is there a role of private enterprise or of private consumption for alleviating some of the social problems (e.g., health, education, pollution, poverty, etc.) that we observe and experience in communities across the world? Social Enterprise explores these and related questions in the context of business.
MGMT 724 Social Entrepreneurship: Practical Business Planning (1.5)
Explore entrepreneurship and its ability to create social change by applying business principles and earned income strategies to social missions. Students are equipped with skills needed to draft a business plan for a plausible social enterprise. Note: This class is ideal for those interested in entrepreneurship and social impact.
MGMT 725 Intellectual Property Strategy for Entrepreneurs (1.5)
This course examines: theory and logic of alliances in value creation, alliance evolution in various industries, the spectrum of alliance types from a low level of interdependence to a high. The course is discussion-based, focusing on reading material, case studies and problem sets.
MGMT 730 Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship (1.5)
This course focuses on the legal dimensions of entrepreneurship and is designed to help students develop the managerial capability to work effectively with legal counsel to solve complex problems and to protect and leverage firm resources.
**NEW** MGMT 833 Strategy in Technology Ecosystems (1.5)
The course deals with strategic management topics of interest to ventures that operate in technological ecosystems. Topics covered include platforms, network effects, coping with disruptive innovation, and how technology can create new markets and revolutionize existing ones. Note: Students will gain an appreciation for the unique dilemmas that can unfold at the intersection of strategic management and technological change.
