The McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation

The Baker Institute’s new McNair Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation conducts policy research to better understand and promote entrepreneurship and innovation. It also provides a forum for stakeholders throughout the entrepreneurial ecosystem to debate ideas, share understanding and effect change. The McNair Center aims to make a real contribution to society and help create an environment that empowers ingenuity and creativity, unleashes the productivity of private enterprise and builds sustainable economic growth. The center is the research-oriented cornerstone of a larger, nationwide consortium of McNair Foundation-funded centers devoted to entrepreneurship education.

Rice Alliance

The Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship (Rice Alliance) is Rice University’s nationally-recognized initiative devoted to the support of technology commercialization, entrepreneurship education, and the launch of technology companies. Its mission is to support the creation of technology-based companies and the commercialization of new technologies in the Houston community and Southwest. Since its inception in 2000, more than 1700 companies have presented at the 170+ programs hosted by the Rice Alliance. More than 42,000 individuals have attended Rice Alliance events and over 26,000 individuals subscribe to the Rice Alliance Digest newsletter. The Rice University Business Plan Competition is the World’s Richest and Largest, awarding more than $1.35 million in prizes in 2015 and 154 past competitors are in business today having raised in excess of $1.2 billion in capital.

Rice Business Plan Competition
April 6-8, 2017

The Rice Business Plan Competition is the world’s richest and largest graduate-level student startup competition. It is hosted and organized by the Rice Alliance for Technology and Entrepreneurship, which is Rice University’s flagship initiative devoted to the support of entrepreneurship, and the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Business. This is the 17th year for the competition. In that time, it has grown from nine teams competing for $10,000 in prize money in 2001, to 42 teams from around the world competing for more than $1.5 million in cash and prizes.  All Rice Uniersity student teams interested in competing should see information on the Rice OWL Open.

Owl Open

The OWL Open is a Rice University-wide business plan competition for graduate students and qualifier for the 2017 Rice Business Plan Competition. The winning team at the OWL Open will win an invitation to represent Rice University at the 2017 Rice Business Plan Competition on April 6-8, 2017. The first place team will also receive cash prizes , and an invitation to the Rice University OwlSpark Accelerator taking place May through August 2017.

The Rice Launch Challenge

The Rice Launch Challenge is Rice’s first prestigious entrepreneurship competition, awarding $30,000 in prize money to Rice-affiliated startups. Students and alumni enter their business ideas to compete in one of two categories: High Growth Ventures and Small Business Ideas. The event will take place in the Anderson Family Commons on Wednesday, March 29th at 6:00pm.
